Many Lowe's Companies, Inc. (NYSE:LOW) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Lowe's Companies

The Executive Vice President of Stores, Joseph McFarland, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.1m worth of shares at a price of US$271 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$269. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

Does Lowe's Companies Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It's great to see that Lowe's Companies insiders own 0.1% of the company, worth about US$161m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. But since Lowe's Companies is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this.
