It is hard to get excited after looking at Boot Barn Holdings' (NYSE:BOOT) recent performance, when its stock has declined 10% over the past three months. However, stock prices are usually driven by a company’s financial performance over the long term, which in this case looks quite promising. In this article, we decided to focus on Boot Barn Holdings' ROE.

ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In simpler terms, it measures the profitability of a company in relation to shareholder's equity.

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?

The formula for return on equity is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Boot Barn Holdings is:

15% = US$153m ÷ US$1.0b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).

The 'return' is the yearly profit. That means that for every $1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated $0.15 in profit.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

Boot Barn Holdings' Earnings Growth And 15% ROE

To begin with, Boot Barn Holdings seems to have a respectable ROE. Even so, when compared with the average industry ROE of 19%, we aren't very excited. That being the case, the significant five-year 25% net income growth reported by Boot Barn Holdings comes as a pleasant surprise. We believe that there might be other aspects that are positively influencing the company's earnings growth. For instance, the company has a low payout ratio or is being managed efficiently. Bear in mind, the company does have a respectable ROE. It is just that the industry ROE is higher. So this also does lend some color to the high earnings growth seen by the company.

As a next step, we compared Boot Barn Holdings' net income growth with the industry, and pleasingly, we found that the growth seen by the company is higher than the average industry growth of 17%.
