What CarParts.com, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:PRTS) 29% Share Price Gain Is Not Telling You

Despite an already strong run, CarParts.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:PRTS) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 29% in the last thirty days. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 59% share price drop in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, it's still not a stretch to say that CarParts.com's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Specialty Retail industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.4x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How CarParts.com Has Been Performing

CarParts.com hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn around. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

How Is CarParts.com's Revenue Growth Trending?

CarParts.com's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 9.2%. Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 0.9% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 4.3%, which paints a poor picture.

With this in consideration, we think it doesn't make sense that CarParts.com's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company reject the analyst cohort's pessimism and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as these declining revenues are likely to weigh on the share price eventually.
