Even With A 38% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Smart Share Global Limited's (NASDAQ:EM) Performance Completely

Smart Share Global Limited (NASDAQ:EM) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 38% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 47% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Smart Share Global's P/S ratio of 0.4x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Specialty Retail industry in the United States is about the same. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has Smart Share Global Performed Recently?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Smart Share Global's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn around. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Smart Share Global?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Smart Share Global would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Fortunately, a few good years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by 19% in total over the last three years. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 19% as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 4.5%, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's curious that Smart Share Global's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Bottom Line On Smart Share Global's P/S

Smart Share Global's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Looking at Smart Share Global's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't giving the boost to its P/S that we would've expected. When we see a strong revenue outlook, with growth outpacing the industry, we can only assume potential uncertainty around these figures are what might be placing slight pressure on the P/S ratio. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.
