Newmark Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:NMRK) Stocks Shoot Up 28% But Its P/E Still Looks Reasonable

Newmark Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:NMRK) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 28% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 36%.

After such a large jump in price, given close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 18x, you may consider Newmark Group as a stock to avoid entirely with its 39.2x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

Newmark Group certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Is There Enough Growth For Newmark Group?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Newmark Group's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 69%. Still, incredibly EPS has fallen 76% in total from three years ago, which is quite disappointing. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 25% each year during the coming three years according to the five analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 10% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Newmark Group's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

What We Can Learn From Newmark Group's P/E?

Shares in Newmark Group have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that Newmark Group maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
