Fathom Holdings Inc.'s (NASDAQ:FTHM) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 30%
Despite an already strong run, Fathom Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:FTHM) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 30% in the last thirty days. But the last month did very little to improve the 62% share price decline over the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, Fathom Holdings may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Real Estate industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.2x and even P/S higher than 8x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Fathom Holdings' Recent Performance Look Like?
Fathom Holdings hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Fathom Holdings would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 12%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 35% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 14% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 16%, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Fathom Holdings' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What We Can Learn From Fathom Holdings' P/S?
Fathom Holdings' recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As expected, our analysis of Fathom Holdings' analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
