Here's Why We Think IQVIA Holdings (NYSE:IQV) Is Well Worth Watching

It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in IQVIA Holdings (NYSE:IQV). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Quickly Is IQVIA Holdings Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Who among us would not applaud IQVIA Holdings's stratospheric annual EPS growth of 58%, compound, over the last three years? Growth that fast may well be fleeting, but like a lotus blooming from a murky pond, it sparks joy for the wary stock pickers.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). The good news is that IQVIA Holdings is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 3.3 percentage points to 10%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are IQVIA Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. Because oftentimes, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.

We do note that, in the last year, insiders sold -US$1.5m worth of shares. But that's far less than the US$2.7m insiders spend purchasing stock. I find this encouraging because it suggests they are optimistic about the IQVIA Holdings's future. It is also worth noting that it was Independent Director John Danhakl who made the biggest single purchase, worth US$2.7m, paying US$273 per share.

The good news, alongside the insider buying, for IQVIA Holdings bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$313m. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.

Does IQVIA Holdings Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

IQVIA Holdings's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. Just as heartening; insiders both own and are buying more stock. Because of the potential that it has reached an inflection point, I'd suggest IQVIA Holdings belongs on the top of your watchlist. You should always think about risks though.
