Bio-Techne Corporation's (NASDAQ:TECH) Shares Climb 33% But Its Business Is Yet to Catch Up

Bio-Techne Corporation (NASDAQ:TECH) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 33% gain and recovering from prior weakness. But the gains over the last month weren't enough to make shareholders whole, as the share price is still down 2.0% in the last twelve months.

Since its price has surged higher, Bio-Techne may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 64.1x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 17x and even P/E's lower than 9x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Recent times haven't been advantageous for Bio-Techne as its earnings have been falling quicker than most other companies. It might be that many expect the dismal earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Bio-Techne's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 25%. Regardless, EPS has managed to lift by a handy 8.0% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 3.0% as estimated by the twelve analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 12% growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's alarming that Bio-Techne's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

The Bottom Line On Bio-Techne's P/E

Bio-Techne's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our examination of Bio-Techne's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
