Insider Sales At Sagimet Biosciences Landed A Good Price

While it’s been a great week for Sagimet Biosciences Inc. (NASDAQ:SGMT) shareholders after stock gained 11%, company insiders might have missed out on those gains after selling stock earlier this year. Had they waited, they might have been able to sell their stock at much higher prices and thereby received a better value on their investment.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Sagimet Biosciences

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when CEO, President & Director David Happel bought US$64k worth of shares at a price of US$5.27 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$3.42). While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when an insider has purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price. David Happel was the only individual insider to buy shares in the last twelve months.

Does Sagimet Biosciences Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Sagimet Biosciences insiders own about US$12m worth of shares. That equates to 11% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
