How Much Did Radius Health's(NASDAQ:RDUS) Shareholders Earn From Share Price Movements Over The Last Five Years?

It is doubtless a positive to see that the Radius Health, Inc. (NASDAQ:RDUS) share price has gained some 58% in the last three months. But don't envy holders -- looking back over 5 years the returns have been really bad. The share price has failed to impress anyone , down a sizable 65% during that time. So we're hesitant to put much weight behind the short term increase. But it could be that the fall was overdone.

Radius Health wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 23% in the last year, Radius Health shareholders lost 8.3%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 11% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
