Orgenesis Inc.'s (NASDAQ:ORGS) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 119%
Orgenesis Inc. (NASDAQ:ORGS) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 119% after a shaky period beforehand. But the last month did very little to improve the 54% share price decline over the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, Orgenesis' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Biotechs industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 15.7x and even P/S above 75x are quite common. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Orgenesis Performed Recently?
For instance, Orgenesis' receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Orgenesis' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 5.3%. The latest three year period has seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, a stark contrast to the last 12 months. So while the company has done a great job in the past, it's somewhat concerning to see revenue growth decline so harshly.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 1,038% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
In light of this, it's understandable that Orgenesis' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Final Word
Orgenesis' recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Orgenesis revealed its three-year revenue trends are contributing to its low P/S, given they look worse than current industry expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price experience a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Orgenesis (at least 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable), and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
