Things Look Grim For OmniAb, Inc. (NASDAQ:OABI) After Today's Downgrade
Today is shaping up negative for OmniAb, Inc. (NASDAQ:OABI) shareholders, with the analysts delivering a substantial negative revision to this year's forecasts. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) estimates were cut sharply as analysts factored in the latest outlook for the business, concluding that they were too optimistic previously.
Following the latest downgrade, the seven analysts covering OmniAb provided consensus estimates of US$32m revenue in 2024, which would reflect a painful 50% decline on its sales over the past 12 months. Per-share losses are expected to explode, reaching US$0.56 per share. However, before this estimates update, the consensus had been expecting revenues of US$47m and US$0.49 per share in losses. Ergo, there's been a clear change in sentiment, with the analysts administering a notable cut to this year's revenue estimates, while at the same time increasing their loss per share forecasts.
View our latest analysis for OmniAb
There was no major change to the consensus price target of US$9.75, signalling that the business is performing roughly in line with expectations, despite lower earnings per share forecasts.
Of course, another way to look at these forecasts is to place them into context against the industry itself. We would highlight that sales are expected to reverse, with a forecast 50% annualised revenue decline to the end of 2024. That is a notable change from historical growth of 38% over the last three years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 6.0% annually for the foreseeable future. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - OmniAb is expected to lag the wider industry.
The Bottom Line
The most important thing to take away is that analysts increased their loss per share estimates for this year. Regrettably, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and the latest forecasts imply the business will grow sales slower than the wider market. The lack of change in the price target is puzzling in light of the downgrade but, with a serious decline expected this year, we wouldn't be surprised if investors were a bit wary of OmniAb.
Even so, the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for the value creation of shareholders. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for OmniAb going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here.
