Metagenomi, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:MGX) 26% Dip In Price Shows Sentiment Is Matching Revenues
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Metagenomi, Inc. (NASDAQ:MGX) shares are down a considerable 26% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 81% loss during that time.
After such a large drop in price, Metagenomi may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.3x, since almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 9.4x and even P/S higher than 55x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does Metagenomi's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Recent times haven't been great for Metagenomi as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Metagenomi's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 45% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, aided by its incredible short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 28% per year over the next three years. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 142% each year.
In light of this, it's understandable that Metagenomi's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
The Final Word
Having almost fallen off a cliff, Metagenomi's share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
It's clear to see that Metagenomi maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
