When you buy and hold a stock for the long term, you definitely want it to provide a positive return. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the Innoviva, Inc. (NASDAQ:INVA) share price is up 36% in the last five years, that's less than the market return. The last year has been disappointing, with the stock price down 11% in that time.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the five years of share price growth, Innoviva moved from a loss to profitability. That's generally thought to be a genuine positive, so we would expect to see an increasing share price. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. We can see that the Innoviva share price is down 10% in the last three years. Meanwhile, EPS is up 31% per year. So there seems to be a mismatch between the positive EPS growth and the change in the share price, which is down -4% per year.
