With a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 4.5x Alkermes plc (NASDAQ:ALKS) may be sending very bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all the Biotechs companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 13x and even P/S higher than 63x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Alkermes Performed Recently?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Alkermes' revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think Alkermes' future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Alkermes' to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 6.7%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 6.1% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 12% per year during the coming three years according to the nine analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 102% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Alkermes' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What Does Alkermes' P/S Mean For Investors?

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of Alkermes' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
