System1, Inc.'s (NYSE:SST) Share Price Boosted 31% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Those holding System1, Inc. (NYSE:SST) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 31% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 52% share price drop in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, it would still be understandable if you think System1 is a stock with good investment prospects with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 0.2x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Interactive Media and Services industry have P/S ratios above 1.1x. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How System1 Has Been Performing
System1 could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, System1 would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 20%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 60% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 16% during the coming year according to the lone analyst following the company. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 16%, which paints a poor picture.
In light of this, it's understandable that System1's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What We Can Learn From System1's P/S?
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift System1's P/S close to the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
It's clear to see that System1 maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
