Omnicom Group's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage
We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. However, prior to this announcement, Omnicom Group's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 28.6%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 30% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Omnicom Group Has A Solid Track Record
The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from $2.00 total annually to $2.80. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 3.4% a year over that time. While the consistency in the dividend payments is impressive, we think the relatively slow rate of growth is less attractive.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Earnings has been rising at 4.3% per annum over the last five years, which admittedly is a bit slow. While growth may be thin on the ground, Omnicom Group could always pay out a higher proportion of earnings to increase shareholder returns.
Omnicom Group Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
Overall, we think that this is a great income investment, and we think that maintaining the dividend this year may have been a conservative choice. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. Earnings growth generally bodes well for the future value of company dividend payments.
