Returns At Grindr (NYSE:GRND) Are On The Way Up
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. So on that note, Grindr (NYSE:GRND) looks quite promising in regards to its trends of return on capital.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Grindr is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.052 = US$21m ÷ (US$445m - US$36m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2022).
So, Grindr has an ROCE of 5.2%. Even though it's in line with the industry average of 5.2%, it's still a low return by itself.

The Trend Of ROCE
Grindr has not disappointed with their ROCE growth. Looking at the data, we can see that even though capital employed in the business has remained relatively flat, the ROCE generated has risen by 22% over the last one year. So our take on this is that the business has increased efficiencies to generate these higher returns, all the while not needing to make any additional investments. On that front, things are looking good so it's worth exploring what management has said about growth plans going forward.
In Conclusion...
To bring it all together, Grindr has done well to increase the returns it's generating from its capital employed. Astute investors may have an opportunity here because the stock has declined 43% in the last year. With that in mind, we believe the promising trends warrant this stock for further investigation.
