The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From DHI Group, Inc.'s (NYSE:DHX) Revenues Yet As Shares Tumble 34%
DHI Group, Inc. (NYSE:DHX) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 34% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 42% share price drop.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, DHI Group may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x, considering almost half of all companies in the Interactive Media and Services industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1x and even P/S higher than 3x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does DHI Group's Recent Performance Look Like?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, DHI Group's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like DHI Group's to be considered reasonable.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 6.6%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 18% in total. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 7.3% over the next year. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 13%, which paints a poor picture.
With this information, we are not surprised that DHI Group is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
The Key Takeaway
DHI Group's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
It's clear to see that DHI Group maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
