Investors Appear Satisfied With TechTarget, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:TTGT) Prospects As Shares Rocket 29%
Those holding TechTarget, Inc. (NASDAQ:TTGT) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 29% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Looking further back, the 19% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.
Following the firm bounce in price, when almost half of the companies in the United States' Media industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.9x, you may consider TechTarget as a stock not worth researching with its 3.8x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

How TechTarget Has Been Performing
TechTarget hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the market is expecting the poor revenue to reverse, justifying it's current high P/S.. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

TechTarget's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 15% decrease to the company's top line. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 13% in total. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the eight analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 7.2% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 4.9% growth forecast for the broader industry.
In light of this, it's understandable that TechTarget's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

Shares in TechTarget have seen a strong upwards swing lately, which has really helped boost its P/S figure. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
