trivago N.V.'s (NASDAQ:TRVG) Shares Bounce 32% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry
trivago N.V. (NASDAQ:TRVG) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 32% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 13% in the last twelve months.
Even after such a large jump in price, trivago may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x, considering almost half of all companies in the Interactive Media and Services industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.3x and even P/S higher than 4x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How trivago Has Been Performing
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, trivago's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like trivago's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 8.1%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 50% in total over the last three years. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 5.9% each year during the coming three years according to the eight analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 12% each year, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we can see why trivago is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Key Takeaway
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift trivago's P/S close to the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
As expected, our analysis of trivago's analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
