If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out SPAR Group (NASDAQ:SGRP) Before It's Too Late
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like SPAR Group (NASDAQ:SGRP). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

SPAR Group's Improving Profits
In a capitalist society capital chases profits, and that means share prices tend rise with earnings per share (EPS). So like the hint of a smile on a face that I love, growing EPS generally makes me look twice. You can imagine, then, that it almost knocked my socks off when I realized that SPAR Group grew its EPS from US$0.034 to US$0.22, in one short year. When you see earnings grow that quickly, it often means good things ahead for the company.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). SPAR Group maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 9.8% to US$255m. That's a real positive.

Since SPAR Group is no giant, with a market capitalization of US$25m, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.
Are SPAR Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that SPAR Group insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. In fact, they own 41% of the shares, making insiders a very influential shareholder group. I'm reassured by this kind of alignment, as it suggests the business will be run for the benefit of shareholders. Of course, SPAR Group is a very small company, with a market cap of only US$25m. So despite a large proportional holding, insiders only have US$10m worth of stock. That might not be a huge sum but it should be enough to keep insiders motivated!
Is SPAR Group Worth Keeping An Eye On?
SPAR Group's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders certainly brightens my view of the company. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So to my mind SPAR Group is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies.
