Outbrain Inc. (NASDAQ:OB) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 41% share price drop in the last month. The last month has meant the stock is now only up 7.2% during the last year.

After such a large drop in price, Outbrain may be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, considering almost half of all companies in the Interactive Media and Services industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1x and even P/S higher than 3x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Outbrain's Recent Performance Look Like?

Outbrain could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

Outbrain's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 4.9% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 12% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 21% per year over the next three years. With the industry only predicted to deliver 12% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Outbrain's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Final Word

Outbrain's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

To us, it seems Outbrain currently trades on a significantly depressed P/S given its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the rest of its industry. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.
