Outbrain Inc.'s (NASDAQ:OB) Shares Bounce 35% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry
Outbrain Inc. (NASDAQ:OB) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 35% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 49% in the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Outbrain's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Interactive Media and Services industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.3x and even P/S above 4x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Outbrain Has Been Performing
Outbrain could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.
Keen to find out how analysts think Outbrain's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?
In order to justify its P/S ratio, Outbrain would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 4.4%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 7.0% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 7.5% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 14% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this in consideration, its clear as to why Outbrain's P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On Outbrain's P/S
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Outbrain's P/S close to the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As expected, our analysis of Outbrain's analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
