Magnite, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:MGNI) 25% Cheaper Price Remains In Tune With Earnings
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Magnite, Inc. (NASDAQ:MGNI) share price has dived 25% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 15% in that time.
Although its price has dipped substantially, given close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 17x, you may still consider Magnite as a stock to avoid entirely with its 33.1x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Magnite has been doing relatively well. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Magnite's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 230% gain to the company's bottom line. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 14% per annum during the coming three years according to the ten analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 11% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.
In light of this, it's understandable that Magnite's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Magnite's P/E
Magnite's shares may have retreated, but its P/E is still flying high. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Magnite maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
