There's Reason For Concern Over GDEV Inc.'s (NASDAQ:GDEV) Massive 30% Price Jump

The GDEV Inc. (NASDAQ:GDEV) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 30%. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 52% share price drop in the last twelve months.

Although its price has surged higher, it's still not a stretch to say that GDEV's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.2x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Entertainment industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 1.3x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does GDEV's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

GDEV could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn around. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

Keen to find out how analysts think GDEV's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For GDEV?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like GDEV's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 4.4%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 58% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 3.1% over the next year. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 11%, which paints a poor picture.

With this information, we find it concerning that GDEV is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the negative growth outlook.

What Does GDEV's P/S Mean For Investors?

GDEV appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

While GDEV's P/S isn't anything out of the ordinary for companies in the industry, we didn't expect it given forecasts of revenue decline. With this in mind, we don't feel the current P/S is justified as declining revenues are unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. If the declining revenues were to materialize in the form of a declining share price, shareholders will be feeling the pinch.
