Investors Don't See Light At End Of Able View Global Inc.'s (NASDAQ:ABLV) Tunnel And Push Stock Down 44%

To the annoyance of some shareholders, Able View Global Inc. (NASDAQ:ABLV) shares are down a considerable 44% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 90% share price decline.

After such a large drop in price, Able View Global's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 4.6x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 17x and even P/E's above 32x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

The earnings growth achieved at Able View Global over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

Able View Global's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 18% gain to the company's bottom line. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 96% drop in EPS in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 12% shows it's an unpleasant look.

In light of this, it's understandable that Able View Global's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.

The Bottom Line On Able View Global's P/E

Shares in Able View Global have plummeted and its P/E is now low enough to touch the ground. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Able View Global maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
