Orion S.A. (NYSE:OEC) came out with its first-quarter results last week, and we wanted to see how the business is performing and what industry forecasters think of the company following this report. It looks like a credible result overall - although revenues of US$503m were what the analysts expected, Orion surprised by delivering a (statutory) profit of US$0.45 per share, an impressive 22% above what was forecast. The analysts typically update their forecasts at each earnings report, and we can judge from their estimates whether their view of the company has changed or if there are any new concerns to be aware of. With this in mind, we've gathered the latest statutory forecasts to see what the analysts are expecting for next year.

NYSE:OEC Earnings and Revenue Growth May 4th 2024

Taking into account the latest results, the most recent consensus for Orion from six analysts is for revenues of US$1.98b in 2024. If met, it would imply a reasonable 4.7% increase on its revenue over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are predicted to bounce 22% to US$1.84. Before this earnings report, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$1.98b and earnings per share (EPS) of US$1.83 in 2024. So it's pretty clear that, although the analysts have updated their estimates, there's been no major change in expectations for the business following the latest results.

The consensus price target fell 6.6% to US$29.50, suggesting that the analysts might have been a bit enthusiastic in their previous valuation - or they were expecting the company to provide stronger guidance in the quarterly results. There's another way to think about price targets though, and that's to look at the range of price targets put forward by analysts, because a wide range of estimates could suggest a diverse view on possible outcomes for the business. Currently, the most bullish analyst values Orion at US$36.00 per share, while the most bearish prices it at US$23.00. There are definitely some different views on the stock, but the range of estimates is not wide enough as to imply that the situation is unforecastable, in our view.

Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. It's pretty clear that there is an expectation that Orion's revenue growth will slow down substantially, with revenues to the end of 2024 expected to display 6.3% growth on an annualised basis. This is compared to a historical growth rate of 8.6% over the past five years. Juxtapose this against the other companies in the industry with analyst coverage, which are forecast to grow their revenues (in aggregate) 4.8% per year. Even after the forecast slowdown in growth, it seems obvious that Orion is also expected to grow faster than the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that there's been no major change in sentiment, with the analysts reconfirming that the business is performing in line with their previous earnings per share estimates. Fortunately, they also reconfirmed their revenue numbers, suggesting that it's tracking in line with expectations. Additionally, our data suggests that revenue is expected to grow faster than the wider industry. The consensus price target fell measurably, with the analysts seemingly not reassured by the latest results, leading to a lower estimate of Orion's future valuation.

Keeping that in mind, we still think that the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for investors to consider. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Orion going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here..
