Ingevity Corporation's (NYSE:NGVT) Prospects Need A Boost To Lift Shares
When you see that almost half of the companies in the Chemicals industry in the United States have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.4x, Ingevity Corporation (NYSE:NGVT) looks to be giving off some buy signals with its 0.8x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Ingevity's Recent Performance Look Like?
With revenue that's retreating more than the industry's average of late, Ingevity has been very sluggish. Perhaps the market isn't expecting future revenue performance to improve, which has kept the P/S suppressed. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the revenue slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Ingevity's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 11%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 16% overall rise in revenue. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 6.6% during the coming year according to the five analysts following the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 1.2%.
With this information, we are not surprised that Ingevity is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
The Bottom Line On Ingevity's P/S
Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Ingevity's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
