Improved Revenues Required Before Huntsman Corporation (NYSE:HUN) Stock's 27% Jump Looks Justified
Huntsman Corporation (NYSE:HUN) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 27% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 47% in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, considering around half the companies operating in the United States' Chemicals industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.1x, you may still consider Huntsman as an solid investment opportunity with its 0.3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Huntsman Has Been Performing
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Huntsman's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Huntsman's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 3.5%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 32% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 1.1% as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 5.5% growth forecast for the broader industry.
In light of this, it's understandable that Huntsman's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What Does Huntsman's P/S Mean For Investors?
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Huntsman's P/S close to the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
We've established that Huntsman maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
