What Does Avient's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Recent times haven't been great for Avient as its revenue has been falling quicker than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think the company's revenue trend will eventually fall in line with most others in the industry. If you still like the company, you'd want its revenue trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.
Keen to find out how analysts think Avient's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?
In order to justify its P/S ratio, Avient would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 5.8%. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 11% in total. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 2.1% per year as estimated by the seven analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 8.8% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we find it interesting that Avient is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What We Can Learn From Avient's P/S?
Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Given that Avient's revenue growth projections are relatively subdued in comparison to the wider industry, it comes as a surprise to see it trading at its current P/S ratio. At present, we aren't confident in the P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. A positive change is needed in order to justify the current price-to-sales ratio.
