Read This Before Considering Olympic Steel, Inc. (NASDAQ:ZEUS) For Its Upcoming US$0.15 Dividend
Regular readers will know that we love our dividends at Simply Wall St, which is why it's exciting to see Olympic Steel, Inc. (NASDAQ:ZEUS) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next 3 days. The ex-dividend date is usually set to be one business day before the record date which is the cut-off date on which you must be present on the company's books as a shareholder in order to receive the dividend. The ex-dividend date is important because any transaction on a stock needs to have been settled before the record date in order to be eligible for a dividend. Accordingly, Olympic Steel investors that purchase the stock on or after the 2nd of December will not receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 16th of December.
The company's next dividend payment will be US$0.15 per share, on the back of last year when the company paid a total of US$0.60 to shareholders. Looking at the last 12 months of distributions, Olympic Steel has a trailing yield of approximately 1.4% on its current stock price of US$42.31. Dividends are a major contributor to investment returns for long term holders, but only if the dividend continues to be paid. As a result, readers should always check whether Olympic Steel has been able to grow its dividends, or if the dividend might be cut.
Check out our latest analysis for Olympic Steel
Dividends are typically paid from company earnings. If a company pays more in dividends than it earned in profit, then the dividend could be unsustainable. Olympic Steel paid out a comfortable 25% of its profit last year. A useful secondary check can be to evaluate whether Olympic Steel generated enough free cash flow to afford its dividend. It paid out 13% of its free cash flow as dividends last year, which is conservatively low.
It's positive to see that Olympic Steel's dividend is covered by both profits and cash flow, since this is generally a sign that the dividend is sustainable, and a lower payout ratio usually suggests a greater margin of safety before the dividend gets cut.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?
Businesses with shrinking earnings are tricky from a dividend perspective. If business enters a downturn and the dividend is cut, the company could see its value fall precipitously. So we're not too excited that Olympic Steel's earnings are down 4.2% a year over the past five years.
The main way most investors will assess a company's dividend prospects is by checking the historical rate of dividend growth. Olympic Steel has delivered 22% dividend growth per year on average over the past 10 years.
To Sum It Up
From a dividend perspective, should investors buy or avoid Olympic Steel? Olympic Steel has comfortably low cash and profit payout ratios, which may mean the dividend is sustainable even in the face of a sharp decline in earnings per share. Still, we consider declining earnings to be a warning sign. It might be worth researching if the company is reinvesting in growth projects that could grow earnings and dividends in the future, but for now we're not all that optimistic on its dividend prospects.
