Possible Bearish Signals With Olympic Steel Insiders Disposing Stock
In the last year, many Olympic Steel, Inc. (NASDAQ:ZEUS) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Olympic Steel Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The Executive Chairman of the Board, Michael Siegal, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$5.6m worth of shares at a price of US$57.29 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$70.05, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was just 8.3% of Michael Siegal's stake.

Does Olympic Steel Boast High Insider Ownership?
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Olympic Steel insiders own 12% of the company, worth about US$95m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
