Sigma Lithium Corporation's (NASDAQ:SGML) 29% Cheaper Price Remains In Tune With Revenues
Sigma Lithium Corporation (NASDAQ:SGML) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 29% share price drop in the last month. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 45% in that time.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, when almost half of the companies in the United States' Metals and Mining industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.5x, you may still consider Sigma Lithium as a stock not worth researching with its 6x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Sigma Lithium's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Sigma Lithium could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to recover significantly, which has kept the P/S ratio from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be very nervous about the viability of the share price.

Sigma Lithium's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 15% gain to the company's top line. Still, revenue has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 56% per annum during the coming three years according to the four analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 6.9% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we can see why Sigma Lithium is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Sigma Lithium's P/S
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Sigma Lithium's very lofty P/S. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Sigma Lithium maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Metals and Mining industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
