Innospec (NASDAQ:IOSP) Is Looking To Continue Growing Its Returns On Capital
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So when we looked at Innospec (NASDAQ:IOSP) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Innospec is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = US$189m ÷ (US$1.6b - US$382m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2023).
So, Innospec has an ROCE of 15%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 11% generated by the Chemicals industry.

The Trend Of ROCE
Innospec is showing promise given that its ROCE is trending up and to the right. More specifically, while the company has kept capital employed relatively flat over the last five years, the ROCE has climbed 28% in that same time. So our take on this is that the business has increased efficiencies to generate these higher returns, all the while not needing to make any additional investments. On that front, things are looking good so it's worth exploring what management has said about growth plans going forward.
In Conclusion...
In summary, we're delighted to see that Innospec has been able to increase efficiencies and earn higher rates of return on the same amount of capital. Considering the stock has delivered 32% to its stockholders over the last five years, it may be fair to think that investors aren't fully aware of the promising trends yet. Given that, we'd look further into this stock in case it has more traits that could make it multiply in the long term.
On the other side of ROCE, we have to consider valuation. That's why we have a FREE intrinsic value estimation on our platform that is definitely worth checking out.
