MBIA Trades Below Adjusted Book, But PREPA And Complexity Cap Upside

Summary MBIA Inc. is rated Hold with a 12-month price target of $7.00, reflecting its discounted valuation versus adjusted book value and ongoing wind-down. MBI trades at 48% of estimated adjusted book value, but persistent legal and balance sheet risks justify the discount despite improving capital at National. Key risks include the unresolved PREPA litigation, $953 million in surplus notes with $1.7 billion unpaid interest, and holding company liquidity shortfall versus debt. A sum-of-the-parts analysis aligns with the current share price, while peer multiples suggest higher value if catalysts—especially PREPA resolution—materialize. Read the full article on Seeking Alpha

MBIA Set To Deliver Another Mega Dividend In 2025 Irrespective Of PREPA

Summary We believe that MBIA will be in a position to deliver another massive dividend during 2025 similar to that paid in December 2023. $1.6B claim paying resources sitting at National indicate that there are plenty of scenarios in which a mega dividend could be paid, well in excess of the current $250M market cap. Corporate structure with the ability to pay dividends at holding company level without insurance regulators' approval allows for many potential shareholder friendly deals. MBIA's PREPA exposure is manageable with only $200M payments due until 2029, and it is being provisioned conservatively, which is favourable for a sale. We welcome Assured Guaranty's confirmation during the 3Q24 earnings call that they would be interested to buy MBIA at the right price, as it proves that there is appetite. MBIA: Don't See Any Value Here

Summary MBIA Inc.'s share price has been volatile, and the company's historical performance and ongoing legal battle in Puerto Rico are concerning. MBI provides financial payment insurance and manages risk through diversification. The company's recent income shows rising concerns, and the ongoing challenge in the PREPA case is impacting operations. Valuation is not favorable, and there are significant risks associated with Puerto Rico obligations. A sell rating is recommended. Read the full article on Seeking Alpha

MBIA jumps on speculation of takeover talks with rivals

MBIA (NYSE:MBI) rose 10% on speculation that the company has been approached by its rival for a takeover. Assured Guaranty (NYSE:AGO) and Ambac Financial (NYSE:AMBC) made bids for MBIA and the talks are said to be in advanced stage, according to a Street Insider item. The report comes after MBIA disclosed last month that it had retained Barclays as an advisor and has been working with them to explore strategic alternatives, including a possible sale of the company.

MBIA Non-GAAP EPS of -$0.34 beats by $0.26, revenue of $17M misses by $6M

MBIA press release (NYSE:MBI): Q3 Non-GAAP EPS of -$0.34 beats by $0.26. Revenue of $17M (-76.4% Y/Y) misses by $6M. Book value per share was negative $15.70 as of September 30, 2022 compared with a negative $5.73 as of December 31, 2021. The decrease in book value per share since year-end 2021 was primarily due to net unrealized losses on investments, which resulted primarily from higher interest rates and wider credit spreads in 2022, and the net loss for the first nine months of 2022.
