Quest Diagnostics (NYSE:DGX) Has More To Do To Multiply In Value Going Forward
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. That's why when we briefly looked at Quest Diagnostics' (NYSE:DGX) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on Quest Diagnostics is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = US$1.3b ÷ (US$13b - US$1.9b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
Thus, Quest Diagnostics has an ROCE of 11%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 9.7% generated by the Healthcare industry.

In the above chart we have measured Quest Diagnostics' prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you're interested, you can view the analysts predictions in our free report on analyst forecasts for the company.
The Trend Of ROCE
While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. The company has consistently earned 11% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 22% in that time. Since 11% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.
The Bottom Line On Quest Diagnostics' ROCE
In the end, Quest Diagnostics has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. However, over the last five years, the stock has only delivered a 34% return to shareholders who held over that period. So to determine if Quest Diagnostics is a multi-bagger going forward, we'd suggest digging deeper into the company's other fundamentals.
