Benign Growth For iSpecimen Inc. (NASDAQ:ISPC) Underpins Stock's 26% Plummet
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the iSpecimen Inc. (NASDAQ:ISPC) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 85% share price decline.
Following the heavy fall in price, iSpecimen's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Healthcare Services industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 2.3x and even P/S above 7x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How iSpecimen Has Been Performing
It looks like revenue growth has deserted iSpecimen recently, which is not something to boast about. Perhaps the market believes the recent lacklustre revenue performance is a sign of future underperformance relative to industry peers, hurting the P/S. If not, then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, iSpecimen would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's top line as the year before. The lack of growth did nothing to help the company's aggregate three-year performance, which is an unsavory 8.1% drop in revenue. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 9.7% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this information, we are not surprised that iSpecimen is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.
What Does iSpecimen's P/S Mean For Investors?
iSpecimen's P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of iSpecimen revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
