IRADIMED's (NASDAQ:IRMD) Profits May Not Reveal Underlying Issues
The market for IRADIMED CORPORATION's (NASDAQ:IRMD) stock was strong after it released a healthy earnings report last week. Despite this, our analysis suggests that there are some factors weakening the foundations of those good profit numbers.
A Closer Look At IRADIMED's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
Over the twelve months to June 2025, IRADIMED recorded an accrual ratio of 0.20. Unfortunately, that means its free cash flow fell significantly short of its reported profits. Indeed, in the last twelve months it reported free cash flow of US$13m, which is significantly less than its profit of US$20.7m. We note, however, that IRADIMED grew its free cash flow over the last year.
That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.
Our Take On IRADIMED's Profit Performance
IRADIMED didn't convert much of its profit to free cash flow in the last year, which some investors may consider rather suboptimal. Because of this, we think that it may be that IRADIMED's statutory profits are better than its underlying earnings power. But at least holders can take some solace from the 66% per annum growth in EPS for the last three. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock it's worth noting the risks involved. This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of IRADIMED's profit. But there are plenty of other ways to inform your opinion of a company.
