Revenues Working Against AngioDynamics, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:ANGO) Share Price

You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.3x AngioDynamics, Inc. (NASDAQ:ANGO) is a stock worth checking out, seeing as almost half of all the Medical Equipment companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.9x and even P/S higher than 8x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does AngioDynamics' Recent Performance Look Like?

AngioDynamics hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

How Is AngioDynamics' Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as AngioDynamics' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 3.8%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 7.5% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 6.6% each year during the coming three years according to the four analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 9.2% per annum growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's understandable that AngioDynamics' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What Does AngioDynamics' P/S Mean For Investors?

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of AngioDynamics' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

Many other vital risk factors can be found on the company's balance sheet. Take a look at our free balance sheet analysis for AngioDynamics with six simple checks on some of these key factors.
