Shareholders might have noticed that Select Water Solutions, Inc. (NYSE:WTTR) filed its second-quarter result this time last week. The early response was not positive, with shares down 3.1% to US$11.16 in the past week. Revenues were US$365m, approximately in line with whatthe analysts expected, although statutory earnings per share (EPS) crushed expectations, coming in at US$0.13, an impressive 27% ahead of estimates. This is an important time for investors, as they can track a company's performance in its report, look at what experts are forecasting for next year, and see if there has been any change to expectations for the business. So we collected the latest post-earnings statutory consensus estimates to see what could be in store for next year.

NYSE:WTTR Earnings and Revenue Growth August 4th 2024

Taking into account the latest results, Select Water Solutions' six analysts currently expect revenues in 2024 to be US$1.50b, approximately in line with the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are expected to descend 12% to US$0.50 in the same period. Before this earnings report, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of US$1.52b and earnings per share (EPS) of US$0.52 in 2024. So it looks like there's been a small decline in overall sentiment after the recent results - there's been no major change to revenue estimates, but the analysts did make a minor downgrade to their earnings per share forecasts.

It might be a surprise to learn that the consensus price target was broadly unchanged at US$12.75, with the analysts clearly implying that the forecast decline in earnings is not expected to have much of an impact on valuation. That's not the only conclusion we can draw from this data however, as some investors also like to consider the spread in estimates when evaluating analyst price targets. Currently, the most bullish analyst values Select Water Solutions at US$14.00 per share, while the most bearish prices it at US$11.00. Even so, with a relatively close grouping of estimates, it looks like the analysts are quite confident in their valuations, suggesting Select Water Solutions is an easy business to forecast or the the analysts are all using similar assumptions.

Another way we can view these estimates is in the context of the bigger picture, such as how the forecasts stack up against past performance, and whether forecasts are more or less bullish relative to other companies in the industry. These estimates imply that revenue is expected to slow, with a forecast annualised decline of 0.02% by the end of 2024. This indicates a significant reduction from annual growth of 9.6% over the last five years. Compare this with our data, which suggests that other companies in the same industry are, in aggregate, expected to see their revenue grow 7.3% per year. So although its revenues are forecast to shrink, this cloud does not come with a silver lining - Select Water Solutions is expected to lag the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that the analysts downgraded their earnings per share estimates, showing that there has been a clear decline in sentiment following these results. On the plus side, there were no major changes to revenue estimates; although forecasts imply they will perform worse than the wider industry. The consensus price target held steady at US$12.75, with the latest estimates not enough to have an impact on their price targets.

With that said, the long-term trajectory of the company's earnings is a lot more important than next year. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Select Water Solutions going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here..
