BKV Corporation (NYSE:BKV) Stocks Shoot Up 27% But Its P/S Still Looks Reasonable
BKV Corporation (NYSE:BKV) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 27% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 21% is also fairly reasonable.
Since its price has surged higher, you could be forgiven for thinking BKV is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 2.9x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Oil and Gas industry have P/S ratios below 1.5x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How BKV Has Been Performing
BKV could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to recover significantly, which has kept the P/S ratio from collapsing. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

BKV's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 33%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 47% drop in revenue in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenues over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 57% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 3.2% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why BKV's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From BKV's P/S?
The large bounce in BKV's shares has lifted the company's P/S handsomely. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of BKV's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
