Antero Resources Corporation's (NYSE:AR) 26% Cheaper Price Remains In Tune With Revenues

Antero Resources Corporation (NYSE:AR) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 26% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. Indeed, the recent drop has reduced its annual gain to a relatively sedate 5.5% over the last twelve months.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, given close to half the companies operating in the United States' Oil and Gas industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.5x, you may still consider Antero Resources as a stock to potentially avoid with its 2.2x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Antero Resources Has Been Performing

There hasn't been much to differentiate Antero Resources' and the industry's revenue growth lately. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this modest revenue performance will accelerate. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

If you'd like to see what analysts are forecasting going forward, you should check out our free report on Antero Resources.

How Is Antero Resources' Revenue Growth Trending?

Antero Resources' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 6.8% gain to the company's revenues. Still, lamentably revenue has fallen 33% in aggregate from three years ago, which is disappointing. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 22% over the next year. With the industry only predicted to deliver 7.3%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why Antero Resources' P/S is high relative to its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Antero Resources' P/S

There's still some elevation in Antero Resources' P/S, even if the same can't be said for its share price recently. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that Antero Resources maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Oil and Gas industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

Having said that, be aware Antero Resources is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis, you should know about.
