Stabilis Solutions, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:SLNG) Stock Has Shown Weakness Lately But Financial Prospects Look Decent: Is The Market Wrong?
Stabilis Solutions (NASDAQ:SLNG) has had a rough three months with its share price down 33%. However, stock prices are usually driven by a company’s financials over the long term, which in this case look pretty respectable. In this article, we decided to focus on Stabilis Solutions' ROE.
Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. In other words, it is a profitability ratio which measures the rate of return on the capital provided by the company's shareholders.
How Is ROE Calculated?
Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Stabilis Solutions is:
6.9% = US$4.6m ÷ US$67m (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).
The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. One way to conceptualize this is that for each $1 of shareholders' capital it has, the company made $0.07 in profit.

What Is The Relationship Between ROE And Earnings Growth?
So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.
Stabilis Solutions' Earnings Growth And 6.9% ROE
On the face of it, Stabilis Solutions' ROE is not much to talk about. A quick further study shows that the company's ROE doesn't compare favorably to the industry average of 14% either. Despite this, surprisingly, Stabilis Solutions saw an exceptional 53% net income growth over the past five years. Therefore, there could be other reasons behind this growth. Such as - high earnings retention or an efficient management in place.
As a next step, we compared Stabilis Solutions' net income growth with the industry, and pleasingly, we found that the growth seen by the company is higher than the average industry growth of 38%.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Is Stabilis Solutions fairly valued compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
Is Stabilis Solutions Using Its Retained Earnings Effectively?
Given that Stabilis Solutions doesn't pay any regular dividends to its shareholders, we infer that the company has been reinvesting all of its profits to grow its business.
Conclusion
On the whole, we do feel that Stabilis Solutions has some positive attributes. Despite its low rate of return, the fact that the company reinvests a very high portion of its profits into its business, no doubt contributed to its high earnings growth. That being so, according to the latest industry analyst forecasts, the company's earnings are expected to shrink in the future.
