Here's Why We're Not Too Worried About Lightbridge's (NASDAQ:LTBR) Cash Burn Situation
Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, Lightbridge (NASDAQ:LTBR) shareholders have done very well over the last year, with the share price soaring by 124%. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.
Given its strong share price performance, we think it's worthwhile for Lightbridge shareholders to consider whether its cash burn is concerning. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

When Might Lightbridge Run Out Of Money?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. When Lightbridge last reported its June 2024 balance sheet in August 2024, it had zero debt and cash worth US$27m. In the last year, its cash burn was US$7.2m. Therefore, from June 2024 it had 3.8 years of cash runway. There's no doubt that this is a reassuringly long runway. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.
How Is Lightbridge's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Lightbridge didn't record any revenue over the last year, indicating that it's an early stage company still developing its business. Nonetheless, we can still examine its cash burn trajectory as part of our assessment of its cash burn situation. Over the last year its cash burn actually increased by 7.4%, which suggests that management are increasing investment in future growth, but not too quickly. However, the company's true cash runway will therefore be shorter than suggested above, if spending continues to increase. Admittedly, we're a bit cautious of Lightbridge due to its lack of significant operating revenues. We prefer most of the stocks on this list of stocks that analysts expect to grow.
How Hard Would It Be For Lightbridge To Raise More Cash For Growth?
While its cash burn is only increasing slightly, Lightbridge shareholders should still consider the potential need for further cash, down the track. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.
Lightbridge has a market capitalisation of US$142m and burnt through US$7.2m last year, which is 5.1% of the company's market value. Given that is a rather small percentage, it would probably be really easy for the company to fund another year's growth by issuing some new shares to investors, or even by taking out a loan.
So, Should We Worry About Lightbridge's Cash Burn?
As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about Lightbridge's cash burn. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. Although its increasing cash burn does give us reason for pause, the other metrics we discussed in this article form a positive picture overall. Looking at all the measures in this article, together, we're not worried about its rate of cash burn; the company seems well on top of its medium-term spending needs. On another note, Lightbridge has 3 warning signs (and 2 which can't be ignored) we think you should know about.
