Potential Upside For Calumet, Inc. (NASDAQ:CLMT) Not Without Risk

With a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x Calumet, Inc. (NASDAQ:CLMT) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all the Oil and Gas companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.6x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Calumet Has Been Performing

With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Calumet has been relatively sluggish. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Calumet's Revenue Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Calumet's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. Fortunately, a few good years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by 15% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 2.8% each year during the coming three years according to the six analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 3.9% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Calumet's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Calumet's P/S?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've seen that Calumet currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its forecast growth is in line with the wider industry. When we see middle-of-the-road revenue growth like this, we assume it must be the potential risks that are what is placing pressure on the P/S ratio. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.

You need to take note of risks, for example - Calumet has 3 warning signs (and 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) we think you should know about.

Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
