The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). To wit, the PROG Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:PRG) share price is 53% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 34% (not including dividends) in the same period. If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! The longer term returns have not been as good, with the stock price only 7.4% higher than it was three years ago.

While the stock has fallen 4.7% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the last year, PROG Holdings actually saw its earnings per share drop 13%.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

We doubt the modest 1.0% dividend yield is doing much to support the share price. Unfortunately PROG Holdings' fell 3.7% over twelve months. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that PROG Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 54% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 1.6% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
