Some PennyMac Financial Services, Inc. (NYSE:PFSI) shareholders may be a little concerned to see that the President, Douglas Jones, recently sold a substantial US$2.7m worth of stock at a price of US$91.49 per share. However, it's crucial to note that they remain very much invested in the stock and that sale only reduced their holding by 5.7%.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At PennyMac Financial Services

Notably, that recent sale by President Douglas Jones was not the only time they sold PennyMac Financial Services shares this year. Earlier in the year, they fetched US$80.38 per share in a -US$2.8m sale. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$91.29). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was only 5.6%of Douglas Jones's holding.

Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. PennyMac Financial Services insiders own 7.3% of the company, currently worth about US$338m based on the recent share price. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
