PagSeguro Digital Ltd. (NYSE:PAGS) Stock Rockets 26% But Many Are Still Ignoring The Company
Despite an already strong run, PagSeguro Digital Ltd. (NYSE:PAGS) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 26% in the last thirty days. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 46%.
Even after such a large jump in price, PagSeguro Digital's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 11.4x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 17x and even P/E's above 32x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, PagSeguro Digital has been doing quite well of late. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the market, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is PagSeguro Digital's Growth Trending?
PagSeguro Digital's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 14% last year. EPS has also lifted 26% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 15% during the coming year according to the ten analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 10%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we find it odd that PagSeguro Digital is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Final Word
PagSeguro Digital's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that PagSeguro Digital currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
