Why We're Not Concerned About Fiserv, Inc.'s (NYSE:FI) Share Price

When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 16x, you may consider Fiserv, Inc. (NYSE:FI) as a stock to avoid entirely with its 26.8x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Fiserv has been doing quite well of late. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is Fiserv's Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Fiserv's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 50%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 270% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 19% each year during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 13% each year growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Fiserv's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Key Takeaway

While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that Fiserv maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Fiserv you should know about.
